Communication is a fundamental human right according to the UN Convention, and at MIS, we honour all forms of communication, embracing a Total Communication approach. This means we value and integrate multiple modes of communication, including speech, gestures, facial expressions, body language, and the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
While not all students require AAC, we implement its use throughout the day to provide visual and multimodal support, aiding students’ understanding. This enhanced comprehension increases their ability to participate in class and fosters a greater sense of purpose.
Additionally, during moments of emotional overwhelm, accessing spoken language can be challenging. This can limit a person’s ability to express themselves and process emotions effectively. By ensuring access to multiple communication methods, including AAC, we provide everyone with an outlet to communicate. Communication is not just about exchanging information—it is a vital component of emotional well-being and mental health.
